SAN DIEGO JUNIOR THEATRE ANNOUNCES ITS 68TH SEASON

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Junior Theatre is proud to announce the production list for its 68th season.  With nine shows being performed at two different locations, this season will be packed with premieres. The production line-up includes the following shows:

Casa del Prado Theatre, Balboa Park

Mary Poppins (October 23 – November 8, 2015) It is truly a jolly holiday with the amazing Mary Poppins!  Jane and Michael Banks need a governess when Mary Poppins mysteriously lands at their doorstep. Although Jane and Michael’s father had wished for a taskmaster, it is soon clear that Mary is the answer to a prayer. The resulting magic and memorable music will enchant audiences of all ages! Directed by Rayme Sciaroni.

Ivy + Bean: The Musical (January 8 – 24, 2016) Meet two completely opposite 8-year olds: Ivy, who is quiet and loves books and magic, and Bean, who is outgoing and mischievous. These unlikely best friends become the center of adventure on Pancake Court, and their days are anything but ordinary.  Annie Barrows’ enchanting stories come to life through this tale of laughter, friendship and life lessons. Directed by Junior Theatre alumnus, Eric von Metzke.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (January 8 – 24, 2016) Alexander’s classic story is set to music in this fun-filled adaptation. Alexander begins his day by waking up with gum in his hair, and the day just goes downhill from there.  Audiences of all ages will identify with Alexander’s string of mishaps, and realize that everyone has days like his….a great reminder that we are all in this together!

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (March 4 – 20, 2016) Edward Tulane, a handsome, self-assured china rabbit, is a birthday present for 10-year-old Abilene, who loves him completely. When Edward is lost at sea, he finds he has a lot to learn.  Follow his decades-long journey, as Edward learns the transformative power of love. Directed by Catalina Maynard.

The Music Man (April 29 – May 15, 2016) Trouble in River City is brewing! In Meredith Willson’s TONY® Award winning musical comedy, the citizens of this close-knit Iowa town are transformed as “Professor” Harold Hill arrives with self-serving motives, but ends up energizing the town.  Enjoy the journey from the opening Train Scene to the finale of “Seventy-Six Trombones.”

Goodnight Moon (July 1 – 17, 2016) Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon is a beloved classic; now the objects and characters that the bunny bids goodnight to are brought to life in Chad Henry’s clever musical adaptation.  The cat and fiddle, dancing constellations and cow jumping over the moon are just a few that make this a rollicking fun bedtime!

Sweeney Todd (July 29 – August 14, 2016) Sweeney Todd is all at once scarily thrilling and humorously shocking. Barber Sweeney Todd returns to London after fifteen years, seeking revenge on the judge who framed him and ruined his life. The result is a dark comedy, a sinister story and an unforgettable production, with a superb Stephen Sondheim score.

Off-Park Series at Roosevelt Middle School

Alice in Wonderland, JR. (November 13 – 22, 2016) Lewis Carroll’s inquisitive heroine shines with Disney pizzazz!  Alice, the White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Dodo Bird, Caterpillar, the sinister Queen of Hearts and more kooky characters are always entertaining, with new arrangements to classic Disney tunes adding to the fun. A “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” day is on its way! Directed by Junior Theatre alumnus, Eric von Metzke.

Pinocchio (February 5 – 14, 2016) A new and fast-paced story-within-a-story version of a treasured tale:  Construction workers, refurbishing an unfinished stage, encounter an audience – YOU – waiting to see “Pinocchio.”  The workers cleverly and quickly decide that the show must go on, and they create the characters and set using what they have available. This classic story is refreshed with an interesting point of view, but the adventures of the wooden puppet who wants to be a real boy are as authentic as ever.
