Santa Monica, CA –

For 20 years, the Morgan-Wixson has been celebrating the holiday season with an annual youth musical, a full-length musical performed virtually entirely by a cast of talented veterans and newcomers to the Y.E.S. program, aged 8 – 18.  This year, we celebrate with the Tony Award-winning musical, Shrek The Musical.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.

Shrek The Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone!

Anne Gesling, who continually manages to bring the patrons out in droves to see her productions, directs again for the Morgan-Wixson Theatre.  Gesling has directed all 20 annual youth musicals.  In 2011, the theatre had record-breaking ticket sales with the Gesling-directed youth musical Seussical and the Los Angeles Premiere of Pinkalicious, The Musical.  She collaborates once again with choreographer Lauren Blair after most recently collaborating on the MWT’s mainstage production of Legally Blonde this past summer and reunites with the producing team from last season’s annual youth musical White Christmas, Joey Moretti and Tracy Saltzman.
