Theatre Kicks Off “A Year with Frog and Toad” This January
Children’s
Theatre of Charlotte kicks off 2009 with the Tony-nominated musical “A Year
with Frog and Toad”, coming to the McColl Family Theatre from January 23 -
February 15. Adapted from Arnold Lobel’s classic series of children’s books
with music by Robert Reale and book and lyrics by Willie Reale, the production
follows odd-couple best friends Frog and Toad through four fun-filled seasons.
Charming
Frog and anxious Toad emerge from hibernation excited to begin a year of
planting gardens, flying kites, eating cookies and racing sleds. Each anecdote
comes to life with jazzy, heart-warming songs that explore the challenges,
rewards and tenderness of friendship. “A Year with Frog and Toad” celebrates
the joy of having a very best friend with freshness, humor and a winning
simplicity that is suitable for all ages.
Arnold
Lobel’s daughter, internationally acclaimed scenic designer Adrienne Lobel,
co-produced the original production of “A Year with Frog and Toad”, which
premiered at the Children’s Theatre Company of
Minneapolis
in 2002 before traveling to Broadway. “A Year with Frog and Toad” was
nominated for three Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best
Original Score, putting it in the company of acclaimed family musicals like
“The Sound of Music” and “The Lion King”.
Children’s
Theatre of Charlotte’s production is directed by Ron Chisholm, who
choreographed season opener “Peter Pan”. The six-person cast of professional
actors includes Children’s Theatre Core Artist Mark Sutton as Frog and Robbie
Jaeger as Toad, as well as Caroline Bower, Nic Bryan, Nicia Carla and Susan
Gundersheim.
