Children’s Theatre Targets Teens with Upcoming Production

From March 28-April 6, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte presents “Deadly Weapons”, a drama for older audiences of ages 13 and up. Written by Laurie Brooks, whose “The Wrestling Season” was produced by the Theatre in the spring of 2007, this powerful thriller explores the hazards and consequences of reckless behavior among a trio of high school friends.

Moss, Jessie and Serena suspect that old man Leisner has murdered his missing son, so they decide to break into his place to search for clues. When Leisner returns unexpectedly, their seemingly harmless excursion goes horribly wrong. An accident forces Moss, Jessie and Serena to make choices that reveal themselves, their priorities and the true nature of their friendship in ways that they could never have imagined. “Deadly Weapons” challenges audiences to assess the nature of responsibility and how, under extreme pressure, people can behave in surprising and sometimes deadly ways.

This serious subject matter is an opportunity for Children’s Theatre of Charlotte to engage teen audiences, an important goal of Theatre programming. Tickets are $10, roughly the same price as a movie ticket, and in addition to professional actor Sidney Horton , the show features a cast of three talented local high school students, as well as a student Assistant Stage Manager.

The production staff for “Deadly Weapons” also includes young talent from UNC Charlotte. Lighting Designer Jonathan L. Dillard and Costume Designer Jeffrey Hamby will both graduate from the University with Theatre degrees in the spring of 2008, while Scenic Designer Micah Morrison is a recent UNC Charlotte graduate with a degree in Architecture.

“‘Deadly Weapons’ is a great combination of characters with authentic, urgent and accessible voices and a story that challenges its audience while entertaining and surprising them as well,” said Director Matt Cosper. “The real pleasure of directing this piece has been working with young actors on a journey that engages them artistically and ethically.”
