CANYON CREST ACADEMY PRESENTS THE COMEDY SKETCH SHOW

On April 1st through 4th, 2008 Canyon Crest Academy will present a truly unique theatrical experience in its Black Box Theatre:  The Comedy Sketch Show.   In the tradition of Saturday Night Live, a team of talented Canyon Crest students, working together with a gifted teaching artist, have come together to create a fun evening of humorous sketches entirely written during a comedy writing workshop, and then performed by those same students at the show.  This is an unprecedented endeavor for a high school theatre program and is guaranteed to bring down the house with laughter.

"What makes CCA such an exciting place is we can allow a small group of students the opportunity to work with a professional in the community for the express purpose of scientifically studying sketch comedy," says Michael Schwartz, Director of the Theatre Conservatory at Canyon Crest Academy.   That professional is Matt Asciutto, a professional improvisational comedian who is presently the director, head writer, actor and co-founder of the Wimbly Humor Institute, a sketch comedy troupe currently based at the National Comedy Theatre in Missions Hills (www.nationalcomedy.com / www.myspace.com/WimblyHumor ).   Asciutto also teaches improvisation to high school students all over San Diego County, and during his own high school days at La Jolla High School spent two years as a member of the La Jolla High School Zamboni Racers, a comedy improvisation team.  “I’m really excited about bringing an opportunity to high school students to not only create comedic material and present it to their peers, but more importantly, to give kids a venue to create and build this material in workshop format with other writers their age,”  says Asciutto.

Those students include a small but gifted cast:  Sarah Scull,   Sami Matsey,  David McClurg,  Nick Scutti and Isaac Goodfellow.  Many of the cast members are also members of Canyon Crest’s own Comedy Sportz team, an improvisation competition team.   The Assistant Director and Stage Manager is student Alexa Bergman.

Shows are at 7:00 p.m. on April 1, 2 and 3, and at 1:00 p.m. on April 4.  Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $6 for students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.cca-envision.org or at the box office at the time of the show.   Canyon Crest Academy is located at 5951 Village Center Loop Road in San Diego.  The Comedy Sketch Show is a CCA Envision production, a unique, award-winning arts program which enriches the lives of all CCA students through a wide variety of classes -- both during and after school -- through opportunities for exploration and interaction with teaching artists in their chosen fields of study.   Envision is made possible through the support of the Canyon Crest Academy Foundation, www.canyoncrestfoundation.org.
