The National Youth Theatre
Awards
 The
First Annual National Youth Theatre Awards were presented on Monday, June 12, 2006
to honor outstanding work in youth theatre throughout the country. That year, 40
youth productions from 4 different states were considered for the awards. This
year, 85 youth productions from 11 states were judged for the awards. For the
Third Annual National Youth Theatre Awards in 2008, we expect to consider more than 120
shows in 25 different states.
The awards are an outgrowth of the San Diego Playbill Youth
"Billie" Awards started by Rob Hopper in 2002. The enthusiasm for San
Diego Playbill's coverage of youth theatre led Rob to believe that there may be
a need and desire for a website that covered youth theatre throughout the
country. Thus was started the National Youth Theatre website in late 2004,
eventually resulting in the National Youth Theatre Awards that attempt to
recognize at least a few of the remarkable talents in America's youth theatre
community.
The award winners are selected from nominations by a panel of judges and
reviewers. There are currently eight judges, but the ultimate goal is to build
up a team of judges and reviewers across the country to cover as much of the
nation's youth theatre as possible. In addition to the youth who performed in the youth theatre companies, any minor (under age 18) who performed at
a show reviewed by a National Youth Theatre judge was also considered for the awards, as well as the adults who participated in the youth theatre productions backstage (directors, set designers, costume designers, etc.).
