Since 1938, Lexington Children’s Theatre has
been providing quality theatrical experiences for the youth of Kentucky. In this
our 70th year, we are pleased to bring you three World Premiere
productions, including a newly commissioned work in honor of the statewide
celebration of Lincoln’s Bi-centennial. We now invite you to join us for our
70th season as we ask the question – What did you do today?
The season kicks off with the 7th
annual Summer Family Musical the first weekend in August. This year the cast and
crew will bring to life Honk!, the
musical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s famous story of the Ugly
Duckling.
Coming at the end of September is The
Giver adapted by Eric Coble and based on the Newbery Medal winning novel by
Lois Lowry. The Giver explores delicate balance between freedom and security.
The show opens September 28 at 2:00pm with performances the following weekend on
October 4 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and October 5 at 2:00pm. Tickets are $13 for adults
and $11 for children. Groups rates are also available, just contact the LCT Box
Office.
Just in time for Halloween, seasonal favorite The
Legend of Sleep Hollow, rides into town. Based on Washington Irving’s 18th
century classic, this adaptation by Kathryn Schultz Miller is sure to give
families a fun fright. Shows run October 26 at 2:00pm, November 1 at 2:00 and
7:00pm and November 2 at 2:00pm.
Katerina
the Clever proves her wit and wisdom in November. This story of a young
Russian girl who proves her prowess to the Tsar, earning the position of chief
advisor, is the dramatic retelling of a popular Russian folktale. Katerina is
only in town for one weekend however, November 8 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and November
9 at 2:00pm.
The holiday season at Lexington Children's
Theatre is always busy and this season will be no different as LCT brings two
World Premiere performances to the stage. We will kick off the holiday season
with the premiere of If You Take a Mouse
to the Movies on stage at The Lexington Opera House. Adapted by our own
Larry Snipes and based on the popular children’s book by Laura Numeroff, this
production brings Mouse back to the stage, only this time it’s not cookies
he’s craving, but popcorn. As always this inevitably leads down some wild and
wacky paths and will provide holiday hijinks suitable for the whole family. The
show begins Saturday, November 29 at 2:00pm and runs through Saturday, December
6 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and Sunday, December 7 at 2:00pm. Holiday show ticket
prices at $16 for adults and $13 for children. As always, special group rates
are available through the LCT box office.
Rounding out the holiday season is The
Snow Queen, another World Premiere, adapted by Vivian Snipes and based on
the tale made famous by Hans Christian Andersen. In this contemporary adaptation
of the amazing story, Gerda must go on a perilous quest to rescue her friend Kai
before the Snow Queen turns his heart to ice. It is a winter adventure that
proves the true power of friendship. Performances are scheduled for December 14
at 2:00pm, December 20 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and finally, December 21 at 2:00pm.
Perennial favorite Jack and the Wonder Beans returns to the LCT stage this spring. An
Appalachian twist on the British folktale of Jack and the Beanstalk, this play tells the story of Jack, resident
of Wolfpen Creek, and his misadventures in Giant Country. Suitable for ages four
and up, Jack runs January 25 at
2:00pm, January 31 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and February 1 at 2:00pm. Tickets are
$13.00 for adults and $11.00 for children.
Join us in February for the commemoration of the
Lincoln bi-centennial with the World Premiere of a newly commissioned work, Keeping
Mr. Lincoln, written especially for Lexington Children's Theatre by
acclaimed playwright Sandra Fenichel Asher. Sandy has written dozens of plays
including the award-winning A Woman Called
Truth, and more recently, Too Many
Frogs which was a very popular production in LCT’s 2007-2008 Season. Said
Asher, “I am delighted to learn more about the fascinating and vitally
important President Lincoln, and share my discoveries with young audiences.”
You won’t want to miss this historic event which will be on the LCT
Main Stage February 15 at 2:00pm, February 21 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and will close
its run on February 22 at 2:00pm.
Based on the Newbery Honor Book by Bud, Not Buddy author Christopher Paul Curtis’, The
Watson’s Go To Birmingham – 1963 is the powerful story of a funny, warm,
off-the-wall family who survive one of the darkest moments in American history.
The weird Watson’s journey from their frigid home in Flint, Michigan to the
sweltering heat of Alabama because Byron, a young delinquent is in need of some
tough love with Grandma Sands. They just happen to arrive during a time of
upheaval during a summer when racial tensions have peaked in the segregated
South. Join us March 15 at 2:00pm, March 21 at 2:00 and 7:00pm or March 22 at
2:00pm.
And last, but certainly not least, LCT is pleased to announce How
I Became a Pirate a swashbuckling musical for the whole family to enjoy.
Young Jeremy think he’s in for the adventure of his life when asked to join
the crew on a Pirate ship, but soon finds out that life at sea is not all it’s
cracked up to be, and Pirate’s don’t sing lullabies. Based on the book by
Melinda Long, with music by Steve Goers and lyrics by Alyn Carderelli, this is a
season finale you won’t want to miss. Come sing along with us May 3 at 2:00pm,
May 9 at 2:00 and 7:00pm and May 10 at 2:00pm. Tickets for this musical
production are $16 for adults and $13 for children.
We look forward to celebrating our 70th year with
you. So next time you’re asked “What did you do today?” you can gladly say
