CMT MAINSTAGE PRESENTS CANDIDE

May 8-17, 2009

(San Jose, CA—April  30, 2009) CMT Mainstage  presents  Candide, May 8-17 at the Montgomery Theater,  downtown San Jose (corner of Market and San Carlos streets).  Tickets are on sale now, ranging from $16-$23.

Part sophisticated operetta, part screwball comedy with shades of Monty Python, Candide offers audiences “the best of all possible worlds,” according to artistic director Kevin Hauge, who selected the musical for CMT’s 41st season.

Cast members are ages 14 - 20 and come from schools throughout the South Bay such as Wilson Alternative High School, Gunderson High School, Los Gatos High School and San Jose State University.

Mainstage performers will perform Candide to a live orchestra provided by the San Jose Youth Symphony,  conducted by Yair Samet.

“CMT is doing Candide now because we believe our community will appreciate  its meaning and sophistication,” said Hauge. “ This is a complicated piece.  The performers are discovering that it is one of the richest and most highly regarded scores on stage.  The cast has embraced the challenges it brings, and the audience will be richly rewarded by the depth the cast brings to it.“

Candide is directed and choreographed by Jacob Brent, who previously directed this season’s production of Peter Pan as well as Cats two years ago.

CMT received an unprecedented fifth consecutive award from the National Endowment for the Arts, with support for access to artistic excellence, for this production of Candide.  The production is also supported by the Leonard Bernstein Foundation, which holds the rights to the original scores and legacy.   “The Leonard Bernstein Office applauds Kevin Hauge’s efforts to acquaint young Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy,”  Alexander Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein’s son, said. “We look forward to continuing Leonard Bernstein’s legacy of sharing music and art with young people by working with Children’s Musical Theater San Jose.”
